Online Diary is one of the earlier social networking sites and is known as being the first online blogging community. Founded by Bruce Ableson in 1998 the site has hosted over five million online diaries since then and has been influential in the development of later blogging and social networking sites, pioneering such features as friends-only privacy/security measures. The site allows a member to create diaries and post unlimited entries that can be viewed by all, friends-only or strictly private. There is also an optional feature where diaries can be set to accept anonymous notes from other members as well as those outside of Open Diary. “Diary Circles” is a feature where related diary entries can be posted together forming “Open Diary Boards,” a feature that was added in 2006. The site also provides a free e-mail service that is accessible to both members and non-members alike. Open Diary has suffered two major hacking attacks in its history resulting in the loss of both large quantities of diary entries as well as the e-mail addresses and passwords of over 2,000 members. Despite the economic hardships and near bankruptcy brought on by the two security breaches of 2004 and 2008 Open Diary is still functioning today with over half a million members.
